USS CAVALLA (SS244)
What a couple of dedicated volunteers can do to make a change. | ![]() The New Plaza | There is still a lot of work to be done and we need your help. |
Work weekends on the Cavalla for 2010 will be the second weekend of each month
Work Weekend Restoring the USS Cavalla Volunteers from the Dallas Base normally leave Dallas as a group on Friday morning, arriving at Seawolf Park around 4 pm. The Saturday morning workday begins with a great breakfast. You work all day and enjoy the company of your shipmates Friday and/or Saturday evening. You can always break up the work day by taking tourist through the boat. We start back to Dallas sometime Sunday morning. Meals are available on the DE at $5.00 per meal, per person. Friday to Sunday is $20. Sunday morning is coffee and maybe a donut to get you on the road. The meals on Friday and Saturday are very good and all you can eat. You will revert back to a time that was and it will feel great. A forgotten old WWII sub that was ready to be deep sixed is slowly being restored back to it's previous glory. There is still a lot of work to do, but each visit clearly shows the improvements. What to Bring Blankets and pillows are provided, but you will need to bring a clean set of sheets and a pillowcase, a change of clothes you don't mind getting dirty, toilet items, a pair of shorts to sleep in (recommended), and a towel. Berthing (photos below) is on the Stewart (DE238) which is very clean. Showers are available. Tools and equipment are on site, but if you have a specialty, let John McMichael know and bring what you need. Most people arrive Friday and never leave the site until Sunday. We now have a large screen TV, DVD player, VHS tape player and satellite dish.
We Need Your Help We are always looking for volunteers. Its a lot of fun, you get real work accomplished, you get to tell sea stories to people who will listen, and you are helping to restore a WWII war hero. Don't forget your camera. |
