COFFEY, WILLIAM A. (BILL)  LT    Enlisted Rank - CSC(SS)

William (Bill) Coffey passed away September 14, 2007 at the age of 87 in Fort Worth, TX. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Eloise Coffey; children, Pamela, Melinda, William Jr. and Virginia Coffey; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Bill was the ninth of 10 children born to John Sebastian Coffey and Vivien Summers Coffey. He grew up on a farm in Sulphur Springs, TX where he picked cotton for 65 cents a day. That experience and other very similar ones persuaded him to join the Navy, which he did on March 16, 1937, and proudly served 30 years until July 1967. He served on the USS Otus AS20 and completed nine war patrols out of Brisbane, Australia, the Aleutian Islands and Pearl Harbor on the S-41 SS146, USS Tambor SS198 and the USS Sterlet SS392. After World War II, he continued in the submarine service until 1955 while stationed at Portsmouth, N.H., New London, Conn. and aboard the USS Trigger SS564. After completing a tour as a naval recruiter in Palestine, Texas, and after an exam for warrant officer, he sought training at the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Ga. After graduating second in his class in 1958, he served as a supply corps officer, attaining "Mustang" status as an LDO, before his retirement in 1967.
Bill was a WWII Veteran, USSVI Life Member, USSVI Holland Club member and a dual member of both the Dallas and Cowtown USSVI Bases (charter member of the Cowtown Base).

SCHAUB, CHARLES E. (CHUCK)  RMCS(SS)

Charles (Chuck) Schaub passed away March 14, 2007 at the age of 78 in Fort Worth, TX. He is survived by his wife Marie, 1 daughter and 10 grandchildren. Chuck joined the Navy in 1945 and served for a total of 21 years until his retirement in 1966. He received his dolphins onboard the USS Cobbler SS344 and continued to serve onboard USS Conger SS477, USS Greenfish SS351, USS Sea Leopard SS483, USS Diablo SS479, USS Tirante SS420, USS Corsair SS435 and the USS George Washington SSBN598. Chuck was a WWII Veteran, USSVI Life Member, USSVI Holland Club member and a dual member of both the Dallas and Cowtown USSVI Bases (charter member of the Cowtown Base).

MOCIO, STEVE J.   MMC(SS)

Steve Mocio passed away March 9, 2007 at the age of 86 in Fort Worth, TX. He is survived by his wife Doris, 7 children, 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Steve earned his dolphins onboard S28 SS133 in December 1941 just days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He also served on the USS Lionfish SS298, USS Skate SS305, USS Charr SS328 and USS Sawfish SS276. In addition to being a WWII & Korean War Veteran, Steve was a Life member of USSVI, USSVI Holland Club member and a dual member of both the Dallas and Cowtown USSVI Bases (charter member of the Cowtown Base).

DUKE, CHARLES (Ron)  EMCM(SS)

Charles (Ron) Duke passed away May 27,2005 at the age of 63 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Ron was a graduate of the US Navy nuclear power school and rose to the rank of EMCM(SS) before retiring after 28 years of very successful naval service. He resided in Howe, TX and is survived by his wife Jo, two sons, three daughters, three grandsons, one granddaughter and seven great grandchildren.  Ron received his dolphins in 1959 aboard the USS Sargo SSN583, also served on the USS Perch APSS313 and was a Plank owner on the USS Nathaniel Greene SSBN636. He was extremely proud of his long and loyal service to our country and will be especially remembered for his great sense of humor, love of family, friends and brilliant mind which enabled him to conquer any task that he attempted. Ron, you will be greatly missed by your family, friends and shipmates.

BROOKS, WALTER A.

Captain Walter Brooks passed away December, 2004 at the age of 76. He had been fighting cancer for the past eight years. He is survived by his wife Betty Jane, three children and three grandchildren. He served on the Bluegill(SS242), Piper(SS409), Robert E. Lee(SSBN601), John C. Calhoun(SSBN630), Thomas A. Edison(SSBN610) and the Canopus(AS34). He was the CO of the Thomas Edison and the Canopus. Because of his poor health he hadn't attended any of our regular meetings so most of us did not get to know him. He was always faithful in renewing his membership in the Dallas base of the USSVI.

GRISSOM, RICHARD O.  EM3(SS)

Richard Grissom, passed away September, 2004 at the age of 79. Although he was not active in the Dallas base activities, he was a WWII veteran serving on the Tirante (SS430) as an EM3. He was also a life member of the USSVI, therefore was a current member of our base. Survived by wife of 56 years, Carolyn Martin Grissom, one daughter, one son, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

LEE, WILLIAM JOE (Doc)

Joe (Doc) Lee passed away March, 2004 of heart and respiratory failure. Doc Lee was an active member of the USSVI-Dallas. Attending meetings whenever his health allowed it, including summer parties, Christmas parties, and Veterans Day parades. Doc Lee enjoyed going to Galveston to work on the Cavalla, even when he could no longer go down inside the boat. He was always proud to be a submarine veteran and enjoyed his friends at the Dallas base. His last couple of years was a real struggle health wise, battling heart disease and failing lungs. We will all miss Joe. Joe was 65.

PLUMMER, Henry W. (BILL)  ENCS(SS) (Retired)

Bill Plummer passed away October, 2001. Bill was an active member of the Dallas Base who regularly attended meetings. He retired as a ENCS(SS) after 26 years of service. He served on the Hardhead(SS365), Trout(SS566), Sea Leapord(SS483), and the Dogfish(SS350). He will be remembered for his good sense of humor, friendly personality, a jigger of salt for his beer, and a smile on his face. His wife E. J. Plummer remains active with the Dallas Base.

BENOIT, GARY

Gary Benoit passed away October, 2001. Gary was ill when he joined the Dallas Base in April 2001 and due to his illness he was not able to attend our monthly meetings which prevented us from knowing him very well.  He had served as an STSR(SS) on the Von Steuben(SSBN632), Greyling(SSN646).

GOULD, DENNY  CWO (Retired)

Denny Gould passed away October, 2001. Denny joined the Dallas Base in 1999 and was a lifetime member of the USSVI. Because of Denny's bout with cancer, some of us didn't get to know him very well. He attained the rank of CWO and served on the Aspro(SS309), Robert E Lee(SSBN601), Sam Rayburn(SSBN635), Will Rogers(SSBN659)

WYATTE, BETTY

Betty Wyatte passed away May, 2001. Betty was an active associate member of the Dallas Base who regularly attended meetings. She was a Submariner's widow and wanted to continue her connection to our organization after the death of her husband.
