The January meeting of the USSVI-Dallas Base was called to order at Spring Creek Barbeque Restaurant in Addison, TX January 9, 2010 by Dallas Base Commander Wayne Standerfer at 12:08 PM.

Present were the following members and guests:

Members: Maurice Barksdale, Charlie Cloud, Peter Filidoro, Jim Fox, John Hazen, Marv Koch, James Lucas, Paul McAlister, Don McClane, Tom McCutcheon, Stan Miller, Frank Morgan, Jeff Morris, Joe Pack, Leonard Reneau, John Reynolds, Michael Snyder, Jo Lynn Standerfer, Wayne Standerfer.

Guests:  Linda Fox, Mary Koch, Connie McAlister, Patti McClane, Jean McCutcheon, Sue Morris.

The Invocation was given by: Charlie Cloud.

The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by: Wayne Standerfer.

The Submariner’s Creed was read by: Wayne Standerfer.

A moment of silence was observed to remember our Shipmates who made the supreme sacrifice.

Wayne Standerfer then read the names of the Boats on Eternal Patrol for the month of January while Charlie Cloud tolled the bell.

January Birthdays:

·    John Barber, Ken Ballard, Maurice Barksdale, Phil Burkett, Kirk Counard, Timothy Davis, James Doonan, Eddie Griffith, Shon Lambright, Mike Snyder.

Committee Reports:

·    Secretary: Peter Filidoro read the minutes of the November meeting. The minutes were approved as presented.

 

·    Treasurer’s Report: Charlie Cloud presented the Treasurer’s report for December. The report was approved as presented.

 

·    Membership: Stan Miller reported there are no new members. He has the names of 3 potential new members that he is in the process of contacting. There are 8 members on the DINK list for not paying their 2010 dues.

 

·    Kaps for Kids: Stan Miller reported that we have everything we need, hats, honoree Submariner certificates and a picture of the USS Dallas. As soon as he hears back, from the contact person at Children’s Hospital, arrangements for the visit will be made. Additional hats will be taken for siblings; we will not notify the press, since this event is for the children and not publicity for the Base. 

 

·    Storekeeper: No report, Mel Polen was not at the meeting.

·    Scholarship: Frank Morgan reported, the Base Scholarship is named in honor of a Base member that has gone on Eternal Patrol.  We have no Base member to name this year’s scholarship for. A monition was made, seconded and passed to name this year’s scholarship in honor of a former Shipmate of Frank Morgan who died unexpectedly last year.  Details will be provided at the February meeting.

Old Business:

·    Annual Dues Update: Of the 8 members who have not paid their 2010 dues, 4 have committed to pay. We are going to end up with about 100 members this year.

 

·    Speakers: We still need speakers for the meetings.

·    Entertainment Chairman: The Base Commander is still looking for someone to volunteer for Entertainment chairman.

·    Dallas Base Challenge Coin: The front of the coin will be the Dallas Base patch. Base members are encouraged to submit designs for the back of the coin. A decision will be made at the March meeting.

 New Business

·    New member applications: have been updated with the Base Secretary’s address. Old applications should not be used. All applications should be sent to Peter Filidoro, Base Secretary.

·    New prospects: All new prospects need to be forwarded to Stan Miller.

·    Girl Scout Cookie Distribution: will be Friday, Saturday and Monday, February 19th, 20th and 22nd. We will be working at a warehouse, same as last year, except on Monday some workers will be needed at the warehouse and some at a trailer location. A sign up sheet is available to sign up.

·    E-Board meeting: will be held on February 6th, either before or after the Base meeting, to set the 2010 Base budget. All Base members are welcome to attend.

·    Discussions were held on the following topics; changing the Christmas gift exchange, possibly having the gifts donated to Veterans; location for the next Christmas party; sending a Bible, with an inscription, in place of flowers for a member’s funeral; having a display of Submarine memorabilia at the local Library.

 Good of the Order

·    WWII Convention: will be in Galveston, March 1st through the 4th.  This will be the last convention of WWII Sub Vets in Texas. Any Members that would like to attend are encouraged to do so.

 

·    The Central Region Director, Carl Schmidt will be visiting the Base at the February meeting.

 

·    Holland Club Presentations will be at the February meeting. There are 6 members going into the Holland Club this year.

·    Next meeting: Will be the combined Dallas and Cowtown Base meeting, at 12 noon, February 6th at the Oasis Restaurant on Joe Pool Lake.

 50/50 Drawing: Joe Pack won the 50/50 for $50.

The Benediction was given by Charlie Cloud.

 The meeting was adjourned at 1:03 PM
