The June meeting of the USSVI-Dallas Base was called to order at Spring Creek Barbeque Restaurant in Addison, TX June 6, 2009 by Dallas Base Commander Wayne Standerfer at 12:00PM.

Present were the following members and guests:

Members: Rob Althaus, Ken Ballard, Charlie Cloud, Tim Davis, Peter Filidoro, Doug Gallagher, James Harrelson, Ron Jansen, James Lucas, Tom McCutcheon, Frank Morgan, Jeff Morris, William Rice, Wayne Standerfer, Gavin Wolff.

Guests: Neil Cloud, Jean McCutcheon, Shirley Rice.

A moment of silence was observed to remember our Shipmates who made the supreme sacrifice.

The Invocation was given by Charlie Cloud.

The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Charlie Cloud.

The Submariner’s Creed was read by Wayne Standerfer.

Wayne Standerfer then read the names of the Boats on Eternal Patrol for the month of June while Charlie Cloud tolled the bell.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

  • Secretary's Report: The last meeting was the combined Cowtown and Dallas Base meeting at Joe Pool Lake. The Cowtown Base conducted the meeting. Therefore, no minutes where taken.

  • Treasurer's Report: : Charlie Cloud presented the Treasurer’s report for June. The report was approved as presented.

  • Membership:  In Stan Miller‘s absence Wayne Standerfer reported that the Base membership is at 101 members.

  • Storekeeper: Mel Polen was unable to attend the meeting, no report given.

  • Scholarship: Frank Morgan reported that 2 Scholarships were awarded this year The recipients are Natalie Erwin, granddaughter of Tom McCutcheon, and Teddy Gambordella, grandson of Don McClane. The money has been forwarded to the schools. Both recipients have written letters to the widows of the members we are honoring.   

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Packing for Troops: 50 boxes were mailed to Brad Graham, nephew of Harry Owens, who is serving with the Army in Iraq. The Base Commander received an email from Brad thanking the Base.

2.  Kap’s for Kid’s:  The member who had agreed to take care of the program has informed Wayne Standerfer that he is unable to do so.  Wayne will take over the program.

3.  Lone Star Race Day: Thanks goes to Base member George McDermott, who works at the track and set up this event. A great time was has by all.

NEW BUSINESS:

1.  Base Phone Chain: The Base Commander requested volunteers for a Sea Daddy Program. There are approximately 70 plus base members we do not normally see on a monthly basis. The volunteers would call these members every couple of months to check on how they are doing.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:

1.  Next Meeting: Will be on July 11th at Spring Creek Barbeque in Duncanville. 2827 West Wheatland Road at I -20.

2. Subvettes: Ladies Purse Hangers with Silver or Gold Dolphins are being sold as a fundraiser. The large size is $15; the small size is $9. The purchaser can designate $1 to go to either the USSVI Charitable Foundation or the Kaps for Kids program.

3. Sub Vet T-Shirts: A California base has Submarine Veterans Pride Runs Deep T-Shirts for sale. We should have a commitment for 6 Shirts before ordering. The Base will sell them for $18 each.

4.  USSVI The First 40 Years: Wayne Standerfer purchased 10 of these books from The USSVI national storekeeper. There is one left for sale, the price is $25.00 which is the cost.

5. Kings Bay, GA: Anybody who is familiar with the Kings Bay area please contact Base member Eddie Griffith. Eddie served on the USS Sea Dog during WWII and has been invited to attend the commissioning of the US Coast Guard cutter "Sea Dog" at King’s Bay and is looking for information about the area.

  50/50
There was no 50/50, the Base Vice Commander, who has the tickets, was not able to attend the meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:36 PM
