The October meeting of the USSVI-Dallas Base was called to order at Spring Creek Barbeque Restaurant at I-20 & West Wheatland Road, Dallas, TX October 3, 2009 by Dallas Base Commander Wayne Standerfer at 12:00 PM.

Present were the following members and guests:

Members: Ken Ballard, Jerry Bringle, Carl Byler, Charlie Cloud, Tim Davis, Peter Filidoro, Robert Guthrie, James Kennedy, Marv Koch, George McDermott, Stan Miller, Jeff Morris, Richard Ost, Daniel Ottinger, Mel Polen, Michael Snyder, Jo Lynn Standerfer, Wayne Standerfer, Don Thieme, Leonard Tunnell.

Guests:  Jean Kennedy, Mary Koch, Sue Morris, Lillie McLendon, Ed Nolan, Trenton Roberts, Linda Tunnell, Roy Wippert, Josh Woods.

A moment of silence was observed to remember our Shipmates who made the supreme sacrifice.

The Invocation was given by: Mel Polen.

The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by: Charlie Cloud.

The Submariner’s Creed was read by: Wayne Standerfer.

Wayne Standerfer then read the names of the Boats on Eternal Patrol for the month of October while Charlie Cloud tolled the bell.

October Birthdays:

·    Dave Boe, Andy Massimino, Robert Guthrie, Donna Williams, Jeff Morris, George McDermott, Richard Ost, Garry Gray, Wayne Standerfer and John Hazen.

Committee Reports:

·    Secretary: Peter Filidoro read the minutes of the August meeting. The minutes were approved as presented.

 

·    Treasurer’s Report: Charlie Cloud presented the Treasurer’s report for August and September. The report was approved as presented.

·    Membership: Stan Miller reported that Base has 104 members.  He stressed that; we should wear some type of submarine gear when going out in public, as a recruiting tool.

·    Kaps for Kids: Stan Miller reported that the caps received from the National Store Keeper were not youth size hats. A demonstration of the original sample hats and the hats that we received showed a significant difference in size, though both are labeled as youth size. The hats have been returned and our money refunded. Stan will look in to having the appropriate youth size hats made up locally.

·    Storekeeper:  Mel Polen reported he has Submarine belt buckles that were special ordered. The people ordering them need to pick them up. The USSVI 2010 calendars have not yet come in; they are expected in the next couple of weeks.

·    Base Officer Elections for the 2010 Base Officers will be held at the November meeting. As of now the candidates are the present officers. Wayne Standerfer for Base Commander; Stan Miller for Vice Commander; Charlie Cloud for Treasurer; Peter Filidoro for Secretary.  Nominations can be made up till the election.  Anyone can nominate themselves or another member, with that member’s permission.

 Old Business:

·    Sea Daddy Program. The Base Commander asked those member’s involved in the program for a status.

 New Business

·    The Jerry Bringle USS Dallas Junior Sailor of the Year Award: Will be Monday November 9th 6:30 PM at the Spring Creek Barbeque Restaurant on Midway Road Dallas.

·    Dallas Veterans Day Parade: The Base will participate in the parade, scheduled for Wednesday November 11th. 

·    Base Christmas Party: will be held on Sunday December 6th at Lawry’s Prime Rib Dallas. The Base Commander will send an email regarding the party. Members need to RSVP by the deadline date stated in the email, if they are planning on attending.

·    Holland Club member’s Base dues:  The Base Commander opened up for discussion a proposed change to the Base By-laws, which would eliminate the exemption of Base Dues, for Holland Club members.  This would apply only to future Holland Club members.

·    Division of 50/50 drawing: USSVI National has requested that Bases conducting 50/50 drawings consider a 3 way split, with 1/3 going to the USSVI Charitable Foundation. A motion was made, seconded and passed that we keep the 50/50 drawing as is and make a once a year donation to the Charitable Foundation.

Good of the Order

·    Fredericksburg Road Trip: Was cancelled due to lack of participation. Only 18 people had signed up, 36 were needed to fill the bus.

·    Next meeting: The Dallas Base will meet at 10:30 AM, Saturday November 7th at the Oasis Restaurant on Joe Pool Lake to elect 2010 Base Officers. The combined meeting of the Dallas and Cowtown Bases will follow at 12 Noon.

·    Ken Ballard spoke regarding raffle tickets for a Mission Flag used in Afghanistan. The proceeds go to the Shiner’s Hospital for Children. Ken has tickets, they are $1 each.

 50/50:

Was won by Leonard Tunnell for $60.
