The October meeting of the USSVI-Dallas Base was called to order at VFW Post 7471, Love Field Memorial Post on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 by Dallas Base Commander Leonard Tunnell at 1900.

Present were the following members and guests: Leonard Tunnell, Marv & Mary Koch, Charlie Cloud, Mel Polen, Jeff Morris, Fred Maphis, Wayne Standerfer, Carl Byler, Frank Morgan, Ron Jansen, Stan Miller, John Barber, Rob Althaus, John Duke and Peter Filidoro.

John Duke led the Pledge of Allegiance and Mel Polen gave the invocation. Leonard Tunnell read the Submariner's Creed, and then read the names of the Submarines lost in October while Charlie Cloud tolled the bell.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

  • Treasurer: Charlie Cloud reviewed a complete report for the October balance, recent income, 50/50, stores and dues. The report was accepted as presented.
     

  • Membership: Marv Koch is still working on several contacts and has asked members to call some contacts.
     

  • Storekeeper: Mel Polen gave a report on the stores.
     

  • Convention: Marv Koch gave a report on the status of the 2008 Convention.

OLD BUSINESS:

·        Mary Koch sold drawing tickets for Gift Certificates to The Purple Cow. Tickets will again be sold at the November meeting at The Oasis Restaurant.

·        We will have a Yard Sale at Jeff & Sue Morris’s Saturday, October 20. Please bring items no earlier than Friday evening October 19. We will take up a collection and order pizza for lunch.

·        2008 dues are now due and payable. Please try to have your dues paid by December 31st.

NEW BUSINESS:

·        Wayne Standerfer reported that we have a choice to work Girl Scout Cookie distribution this year for any of five (5) days. We will probably work three (3) days, possibly Friday, Saturday and either Monday or Tuesday.

·        Christmas Party invitations were provided for those members present. Leonard will mail the remaining members’ invitations.

·        Frank Morgan reported on the 2008 Officer candidates. They are Wayne Standerfer for Commander, Stan Miller for Vice-Commander, Charlie Cloud for Treasurer and John Barber for Secretary. Voting will take place at the Base meeting in November.

·        The members voted to pay $100.00 to provide tickets for five (5) Active Duty Military personnel to attend the Armed Forces Bowl Game December 31st at Amon Carter Stadium.

·        Stan Miller’s son is currently serving in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne. We will have another Packing Party for the Troops to send Care Packages to his outfit. Stan will provide us with a list of items needed.

·        The USS Dallas plans to send 5 or 6 crew members to Dallas for the Veterans’ Day parade. We will coordinate with the Navy League to decide when we will present the Gerald Bringle award.

·        There will be no Base Meeting in December. The Christmas Party on December 2nd will suffice for the meeting.


GOOD OF THE ORDER

·        Leonard read an email from the USSVI National Junior Vice Commander Pat Householder requesting that all USSVI members try to donate at least $10.00 per year to our Charitable Foundation.

·        Michael Bircumshaw, the current Western District Six Commander and Editor of the American Submarine magazine will be a 2008 candidate for National Junior Vice Commander.

·        It was decided by the members to have the November 3rd Base meeting at 1030 just before the 1200 combined meeting with the Cowtown Base at the Oasis Restaurant.

·        Fred Maphis will write an article for the American Submariner outlining to the other USSVI Bases our annual Outstanding Junior Sailor of the Year (Gerald Bringle) award.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 2100.
